How to Download Windows Updates Manually

Step 1 - To download updates to the Windows operating system and save them to disk, first go to the Windows Update Page and click on the Use Administrator Options link on the left side of the screen.  Click Search The Windows Update Catalog - via this link you'll be able to find individual updates.

Step 2 - Under the Update multiple operating systems header choose Windows Update Catalog.

Step 3 - Choose Find updates for Microsoft Windows operating systems.

Step 4 - Scroll down and find the version of Windows you wish to download the updates for.  If you are unsure as to which service pack you have installed or what version of XP you are running right-click on My Computer and choose Properties to display your version of OS and SP.  Once you have chosen which version of Windows to download updates for click the search button.

Step 5 - The search will reveal all the updates ever released for your operating system.  They will be divided into three main categories: Critical Updates and Service Packs; Multi-Language Features; and Recommended Updates.  Select one and browse through the list of what's available.

Step 6 - Scroll down the list and you'll see a brief description of each update.  Click the Add button next to an update's description to add it to your Download Basket.  Once you have all the updates you want, click on Go To Download Basket then enter the location where you'd like the files downloaded.

Step 7 - When you're ready, click Download Now and the file transfer will begin.  Once this is complete you can copy the files to CD if they're to be installed on another PC.  Installation of the updates on teh other machine is straightforward - simply double-click each file to run it.
