Encrypting a Flash Drive with TrueCrypt

Keeping sensative data out of the hands of others is highly important, which is why we use TrueCrypt to encrypt all of the important data at Scurlock Systems. If you're carrying around sensative data on a flash drive, here's how you can set it up.

TrueCrypt is available for free from our Utilities page. Download the software, and run it to install. You'll just want to perform a regular install.

Open Truecrypt. You should see a window like this.

TrueCrypt

Click the Create Volume button (circled in red). This should bring up a new window, which looks like this...

TrueCrypt

By default, the "Create an encrypted file container" option is selected. This is what you will need. Hit Next.

TrueCrypt

This part is set up correctly by default as well. Hit Next.

TrueCrypt

Here you will be selecting where you want to save the file. Click "Select File"

TrueCrypt

Browse to your flash drive, and type in a file name. I typed in Data as the file name. Hit Enter.

TrueCrypt

It should look something like this. Hit Next.

TrueCrypt

This is set up properly for most purposes. Hit next.

TrueCrypt

Depending on what size your drive is, you can create up to 3999MB of storage on TrueCrypt, due to the way flash drives are formatted. For demonstration purposes, we used an 8GB drive.

TrueCrypt

Enter your password. We recommend following the guidelines on the window when choosing a password. Be sure not to lose it, else you will never get your data back! After you've entered it, hit Next.

TrueCrypt

IMPORTANT: move your mouse around that little box for a few seconds. This randomizes your encryprion, making it more secure. Then, click Format.

TrueCrypt

This processs can take a while...

TrueCrypt

Yay! Now, lets mount it and put data in it.

TrueCrypt

At this window, select the drive letter you wish to set your encrypted archive to, and click Select File.

TrueCrypt

Browse to the flash drive, and click on the file you created.

TrueCrypt

It should look like this, now. Next, click Mount.

TrueCrypt

It will ask you for your password. Please input the password you set earlier.

TrueCrypt

This is what it looks like when you've successfully created and mounted a TrueCrypt drive. Now, just navigate to My Computer...

TrueCrypt

And just drag and drop files that you'd like to put on the drive into there. You're ready to go!
